Gabrielle GiffordsElection night November 2nd 2010
As Gabrielle Giffords walked up to the podium, I could feel the energy building in the crowd which had gathered to hear her speak. They had come to celebrate her victory at Democratic Election headquarters inside the University Marriott Ballroom. As she spoke, I could hear the conviction in her voice and of her desire to make Arizona a better place to live. I could feel the crowd connecting with every word Gabrielle said, something just seemed important and magical about that moment as I clicked off a series of 20 frames. One of the images was beautiful, powerful, a moment suspended in a digital photograph, 1/60th of one second, an image of a strong confidant woman with her heart open to her community. An image which represents Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords as a leader and a role model. By the end of the night it was still a very close race but Gabrielle was re-elected by a very narrow margin.

B-52s in the Airplane Graveyard 1990
The Famed Airplane Graveyard / Bone Yard at Davis Monthan Airforce base in Tucson Arizona. Hundreds of B-52 Bombers await the smelter, as per the Salt 2 (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) treaty with Russia. These bombers were laid out and chopped into pieces with a giant crane controlled guillotine. They were left in this state so they could be photographed by Russian Spy satellites for proof of compliance with Salt 2. Shot in 1990 this photograph shows an important part of Cold War History. After a few months trucks hauled away the scrap metal to be recycled at the local smelter. These famous relics are most likely beer and soda cans now.

El Tiradito Shrine 1999
The El Tiradito Shrine (The castaway). The shrine is located in a South Tucson barrio neighborhood. People come from all over the southwest to visit this shrine, which is said to provide magical powers, they may ask for help or pray for many things. Some seek help with a sick child or relative by leaving a photograph, a piece of clothing or a small memento. Some ask for the love of their romantic interest by lighting a candle with their secret lovers name written on the bottom or maybe a poem or some flowers. Some people leave quarters under a candle to ask for help with money troubles. It is said if your candle burns throughout the night, your wish will be granted. It is my hope that by creating this image, I can help others to understand the beauty and the magical energy of the El Tiradito Shrine. Next time you're in Tucson if there is something you need a little help with, stop by this shrine. With a clear mind and a pure heart send your intentions out into the world. You will never know what might happen until you do.

Vato's W 29th Street South Tucson 1983
I was taking a photojournalism class at Pima College and trying to put together my first portfolio. I'd always loved this mural at the Ray and Son's Tire shop on West 29th street in South Tucson and would drive down the street to see if there were any other elements to make the mural a background for a cool image. While driving down West 29th. street one day in February of 1983 I could see this photograph coming together. These two Vato's were walking down the street toward this mural by Artist Luis G. Mena painted in 1979. This was before most gang members carried guns, see the knife in the one Vato's belt? Street fighting was dirty you used your muscles speed and a strait bladed knife to survive in those days. I noticed the knife while framing the shot through my camera view finder. I was thinking to myself that is not a pocket knife it is not a knife you use for whittling that was a stabbing knife, had I asked the wrong people to pose for the shot? Martin wearing the classic Arizona T-shirt had a beer at 10 am the other appeared to be in training, he was drinking a Pepsi and you could see a package of Bubble Yum chewing gum in his pocket. They were just walking down their street, they had a identity a look which identifies their culture their lives and this time. I feel lucky to have been able to meet and photograph them that day.

Signal Hill Petroglyph Site West of Tucson 1999
Many archeologists consider Tucson to be the oldest continually inhabited area in the United States. For thousands of years, Native Americans lived by the once-flowing and fertile San Pedro River Valley, as well as other Tucson locations. In the Northeast side of Tucson the Ventana Canyon Spring and the far East side Agua Caliente (Hot Water spring). The ancient name for those people was The Hohokam "those who have gone before". At Signal Hill the Hohokam left behind traces of their now extinct civilization, although it's not known exactly what types of ceremonies took place at these sacred places. These rock carvings are called petroglyphs, and are made by chipping away the surface of a rock with a hand held rock tool. The Signal Hill site is dated 1200 AD. Shot on a Hasselblad medium format camera on Fuji Velvia Film.
